I have a much clearer understanding of learning disabilities as an umbrella term covering complex cognitive processing differences ,like dyslexia that exist alongside average or above average intellect. learning disabilities are life long neurological conditions not issues of effort or intelligence. Reading and digesting information requires multi step processing from phonemic awareness to full comprehension.
Since my entire student population consists of individuals with disabilities, taking this course gives me the vital tools to better recognize and pinpoint where a student is struggling. I can now recognize whether the barrier is reading, comprehension auditory processing or trouble moving from abstract instructions to physical execution.
