Having the different visuals to share with my students will help all of us remain accountable, and students will have more ways to connect their skills to their future plans.
The standards alignment piece was useful – especially the NCDA framework and seeing how different states define WBL for Perkins accountability. I already knew alignment mattered, but I hadn't thought much about how state definitions drive what we track and report.
I'll review my state's WBL requirements and make sure our activities actually count for what Perkins expects. I also want to use the grade-level progression chart as a checklist to see where we're thin. Georgia's manual was a reminder that clear standards and rubrics make implementation easier – something I could adapt for our program.
This module gave me a blueprint to easily bring into my classroom to make sure students are being properly instructed on WBL as well as core curriculum.
This module reinforced the need to intentionally design work-based learning so all students experience a clear progression. I plan to apply this into coursework, tracking participation, and increasing hands-on, real-world projects that build skills, confidence, and career awareness for every student.
I'm thinking a lot about Perkins V and how it is being addressed in our District. How are we reporting this for our middle school WBL programs and what is happening at the high school level that is creating a brand model for measuring all of the WBL activities for the district.
The two main points I learned in this section is to make the WBL program a contiuum that starts in the younger grades and progress through high school and to focus standards on fitting your school's strengths and needs.
My awareness of the importance of supporting middle school students in career awareness and exploration has increased. High-quality work-based learning experiences at this age level is critical in the success of continuing to support secondary education students in WBL.
I think my main takeaway is the importance of working to get the younger grades involved in more career awareness activities.
This course is cementing for me the importance of continuing to provide these experiences in the lower grades. Our mobile career labs give the hands-on experiences referenced, to students in grades K-6, and I truly to feel that this is a powerful way to scaffold WBL into the increased expectations in grades 7-12.
