Encouraging Meaningful Student Engagement in Online Courses

One challenge I continue to think about as an online instructor is how to encourage meaningful engagement from students who may be balancing work, family responsibilities, and school. While discussion boards and assignments can promote participation, it can sometimes be difficult to create the same sense of connection and community that develops naturally in a face-to-face classroom.

I would love to hear from other educators:

What strategies have you found most effective for building a sense of community and encouraging authentic student engagement in an online course?

Have you used any activities, technologies, or communication methods that significantly improved participation, motivation, or student success?

I am always looking for new ways to help students feel connected, supported, and invested in their learning, and I would appreciate hearing about your experiences and best practices.
