strategies to teach gen y's

Engaging the students on a very earlier assigment, asking the students to use their Iphones and researching different materials, will help keep the y's engaged during lecture....

I disagree, y generation students are more intuned with their friends and social network, then they are in using their phone for research during a lecture. It is of more value if students are allowed to use their iphones for research but not at the time of the demo.

I will have to agree with you Michelle, that is giving them the opportunity to use their smart phones to text their friends, the temptation is at their finger tips, impossible for them to resist. Technology will always have its good and bad, how can we teach our students to distinguish that?

Kessle,
it is definitely a challenge to find that balance & help them learn the appropriate use of technology.

It also opens the door for texting, web surfing and the like.

I agree I have found during discussions they stay more engaged if I have them look up something on their phones.

Jessica,
this can be a good exercise as long as it is well-managed.

Our classrooms are really not structured for smartphones in the classroom. I do encourage them to look up things on break time. I have also been known to jump on the internet in class to look up a question I did not know the answer to. I think this helps the students understand that even though we don't always have the answer, we know how to find it.

melissa,
this is a great flexibility & definitely we need to know our individual classes & judge whether these techniques/ideas would work or not.

I truly enjoy my gen Y students. They are lively, opinionated and have strong personalities.During the class that I teach, which has an artistic format,I allow them to use the black and white option on their phones to recognize how the application of facial makeup reads differently for black and white photography. They seem happy to be able to utilize their phones in an acceptable way for class.

I really enjoy this course. Learning about the different strategies to teach the different generations was very educational. I teach in a career college which contain different generations of learners, knowing their characteristics will help me to be a more effective instructor. I will implement some of the learn tool that I learned in this course.

Laurel,
glad it was helpful. It's also exciting to see the different generations interacting with one another & learning from each other.
