In this module tips on how to support students who are either new English Language learners and or students who are not at a 12th grade reading or writing level.

I learned that monitoring students is a good method to determine how students are engaging in class, do they look bored, lost or distracted, this also will help the instructor notice any "little fires" in the classroom which can be addressed sooner.  Also keeping eye contract to 2-3 seconds to make them feel seen and noticed but avoid eye contact for longer than 5 seconds as this can make a student feel uncomfortable or they feel that they are being started at. I learned that taking short breaks and pausing for a few seconds is helpful for student since the average attention span for an adult is roughly 12-14 minutes.  Using statements such as " Today I will be teaching you about 5 methods for communication" are great ways to engage your students to listen while presenting new information. Lastly, repeatedly reinforcing the same information in different ways and allowing for a time of application increases the probability of students actually remembering new information.
