I think most people don't understand communication is not just talking it also involves listening.

Common instructor mistakes include:

  1. inconsistency in applying rules and expectations
  2. not explicitly teaching classroom procedures
  3. ignoring minor disruptions
  4. focusing soley on negative behavior
  5. lack of clear expectations
  6. not building relationships with students
  7. trying to a friend rather than teacher
  8. making lessons too lengthy or boring
  9. overreacting to student behavior
  10. punishing the entire class for individual misbehavior
  11. failing to follow through on consequences
  12. lack of flexibility
  13. not seeking support

Student behavior is usually best handled before it becomes a problem by finding a way to get them to help themselves or others.

Challenging students can make it hard for the rest of the class.

Setting the stage for success:

  1. Establishing clear expectations
    1. Communicating and modeling desired behaviors
    2. Involving students in co-creating norms
    3. Defining clear procedures for daily activities
  2. Building positive teacher-student relationships
    1. get to know your students and show empathy
    2. fostering belonging and community
    3. positive reinforcement
  3. creating a structured and predictable environment
    1. clear routine and procedures
    2. arranging the classroom strategically
    3. implementing efficient storage solutions
  4. being proactive, not reactive
    1. anticipating potential issues and planning accordingly
    2. addressing minor disruptions promptly and calmly

I believe we need to use more of all kinds of assessments. It will let students shine.

The CAT assessment is a great idea, and will let me know what the students starting point is.

Asking students how they learn best and making an effort to include the styles that fit the class is best practice.

Presenting material in many forms is imparative to meeting the needs of all students. This can be done in class or by providing resources.

Developing the course content involves reading the book and brakeing it down into the key concepts, and deciding on what process will be involved it teaching it to the students.
