Alysha, Creating an environment where students feel as though they are getting individualize attetion is important. It has to be meaningful and relevant feedback and occur on a consistent, frequent basis. Some times we have to tell the students what "frequent" is. It is not "immediate" necessarily, but frequent. Frequent/immediate tome is within 24 hours, but that is just my rule. Whatever your rule as a teacher, it must be communciated to students and followed. And, you're correct - being positive is very important. Once you model these things in your feedback, you may see the same from your students.… >>>

Alisha, Again, you bring good information to the discussion. Clear expectations are set through the syllabus and use of rubrics as well. Communication must be two-way and continuous. Keeping the students connected helps build community among studnets and this can be done in a multitude of ways. Thank you.

Rebecca, I think I agree, but can you elaborate? Thanks!

Elizabeth, Yes, we should never assume what eductional level students may have. This is why I typically ask students to complete a short survey (even if it has 2-3 questions) at the beginning of the course to help determine their level. For example, if you were teaching an online course based on Microsoft Excel, you may ask students to rate themselves as a beginner, intermediate learner or expert in Excel. Or you may give a pre-test with Excel questions/forumlas to guage their beginning point in learning. Thanks!

Alysha, Nice job. You bring up very good points. Without course objectives/learning outcomes being measurable, how do we know the students have learned anything. The course design is especially important as the students must know where the content/learning objects reside and how to use them. And, providing content in a variety of ways for a variety of learning styles is essential whether teaching F2F or online. Thanks!
