Donna, Yes, if you teach a course that is not required, students may have a variety of reasons for taking the course. It's a great way to start the conversation. Thanks for the great list of ways to engage students.

Dori, You are right. Sarcasm can really me misunderstood in written format such as email. Thanks for bringing up that point.

Dori, It is difficult, but so important. We do have to be disciplined and use our best time management skills. It is important to tell students, in the syllabus or announcement, when you will be online and when you will be checking email, discussion posts, etc. Don't become a 24/7 instructor. Thanks.

Dori, Time management for the instructor is so important. If you can share you strategies with the students to help them develop good time management skills, please do. We can all learn from others expertise. Thanks!

Dori, Right on. I just posted similar information to another post in this forum. We have to ensure that the criteria are complete and clear and that the rubric is measuring exactly what we want it to measure. Nice job.
Dori, Yes, and Rubistar will provide additional examples. I look at pre-made rubrics just to see if I can fine turn my criteria or if there are categories that I may have forgotten. We must review our rubrics and make sure they are measuring what we want them to measure. Thanks!
Dori, It is so important that the criteria be just right. The criteria have to be complete and clear so the students understand the expectations, but they should still allow for creativity so students can complete the assignments in ways that best suits their learning styles. Thanks for your input.

Dori, Excellent points! Rubrics do help everyone involved. Making sure the criteria are complete and precise is a must to ensure everything you have discussed here. Thanks for your input.

Melissa, Excellent. Thank you for bringing up the point that rubrics help students and instructors, not just one or the other. Thanks!
Jeremy, Great "C" words. We at times also have to be creative in our communication to help students understand everything we want to them to understand. Thanks for your input.
