Kara, What do you mean you are not "available" to do any revisions? Does you institution not allow you as an instructor to make changes to your course? Is it a "canned" course?
Discussion Comment
Kara, There is a fine line between being present and taking over a discussion board. Sounds like you are doing an overwhelming job of communicating with students. Thanks for your input.

Kara, I actually put in my syllabus when I check email and when I do not. I try to reserve weekends for family and friends and down time. That is why I make all assignments due on Wednesdays at 5:00 p.m. I can answers questions on Monday and Tuesday and grade on Wednesday night and Thursday. Thanks for your input.

Kara, How do you figure out how much time you need for communication, grading, etc.? Your tips will be helpful to others. Thanks!

Tony, Keep working on the criteria in the rubric and ask students for feedback on the rubric as well. This will be helpful. Thanks!

Tony and Nicole, Thanks for continuing the conversation about rubrics. With those criteria, it can be subjective, but it can be more objective if the terms are defined at the top of the rubric. Defining what outstanding, sound, etc. mean helps make it more objective. If the criteria don't help eliminate the subjectivity, they need to be changed. Hope this is helpful.

Anthony, Yes, it's hard to narrow it down to three, but the points you brought up are great. Letting students know up front how much time they need to spend on the course is helpful to everyone. Setting high expectations and letting students know the rigor of the course certainly sets the stage. Thanks!

Tony, Any time we have students do some type of research report, we too stress APA style. This is a difficult thing for students to grasp, but once they do, the reports seem to come out better. Thanks!

Tony, You provide some good examples of language to use. We always get a variety of students and it's important to think about what language we use with different audiences. Thanks!

Daniel , Concise and to the point. Much communication can be improved this way. And, you are right, we can't provide too much repetition or students will become passive and just wait for you to tell them what to do. We have to help students become more responsible for their learning. Thanks for your input.
