I learned that assessments should be a wide range of different questions. True and False questions are easy to prepare and grade but because there are only two options, it gives them a 50% chance of guessing it right. True and false questions defeat the purpose of critical thinking because they wouldn't need a deep understanding of the content to guess either answer.
This module has taught me to use an assessment that actually measures the objective (validity). Also using reliable methods give consistent results.
This module has taught me to manage student questions in a way that keeps the lesson focused while still valuing student input. If a student asks a question that is off topic, I would acknowledge it and offer to discuss it after class.
I learned to use a variety of teaching styles to keep the students engaged and understand the students learning styles. Students should be engaged in collaborative, hands on, and visual learning tasks.
Students with learning disabilities already use tools and apps so as teachers we can learn what they're already using and build onto it.
I didn't know much about accommodations until I started teaching so I learned that postsecondary school do offer accommodations as well. Counselors could play a big part in the success of students finding career opportunities by placing them in the career tech pathway they are most excited about so they are motivated to be successful. They need to stop placing them in a class just to receive the easiest CRI.
I didn't realize the characteristics listed were signs of learning disabilities. My students struggle with memorizing information and note taking so I believe it would be helpful to teach students how to do study and retain information.
I had a front row seat to these reading phases with my son the past few years. I have never seen them written out and explained. This helps in understanding our students with reading disabilities because the phases build on each other so they would each have to be grasped in order to advance.
What I learned in this module is that it is okay to make mistakes. I think its easy to when teaching a new lesson but as long as you correct it. It was helpful to know that you can be laxed something and make a joke about things to show students that you are human too.
The module helped me understand that a lot of school systems don't realize that having hostile and angry students isn't uncommon and can disrupt a lot of classes and rob students of crucial instructional learning. Having a good administration team who removes the student(s) to allow you to continue with the ones who want to be there is key.
