Understanding where students are before you begin a new lesson is integral. We have to meet them where they are before introducing new content.

Open ended questions and guided questions can both serve to lead students to critically think about the information. Peer interaction can help slower learners to gain insight on the concepts being taught.

Technology can help increase student engagement and help to make the lesson relatable to real life.

I learned that I have to plan how I will begin and end the lesson and how to scaffold concepts to help students learn.

Online learning can be very beneficial to students who are self motivated and have good time management skills.

When students become inactive, educators can use several startgies to re-engage them. Additionally, educators can break a three hour lecture into several "chunks" of time that allow students to prepare, work in groups and then actively engage in the lesson. This prevents boredom and inactivity.

Observing and listening to a procedure or a discussion can allow students to reflect on their own skills and improve their performance.  Passive learning can be one of the first few steps in permanent learning. Students can listen, watch and discuss the steps in a procedure before practicing the procedure for themselves. Think about students who are tasked with watching and critiquing their peers perfrom a task. After watching one or two groups, the student begins to plan what they will do differently when it is their time to perfrom. In this example, the passive learning phase is laying the… >>>

One way  I can incorporate active learning in my role is have the students create NCLEx questions based on patients they have taken care of during clinical. Every question is a real person who needs their nurse to be actively engaged in critial thinking when performing their care. My hope is that this will link clinical and didactic together and improve student learning.

As a faculty member, I have often avoided using technology in preparing lessons. last year i took a course on Artificial intelligence (AI)  in the Clasroom. That class taught me how to use AI to develop examples, case studies etc. then I review and edit them to make them realistic or more complex. Once I used AI to create examples of poor nursing documentation. then i gave the examples to my students and asked them to correct/ improve the documentation. They loved it! AI saved me time but it also allowed me to create the "wrong thing" aka the examples… >>>

Soft skills are vital to success in any industry. Knowing how to clearly explain a topic to a patient or a client is necessary. In healthcare, people sometimes talk about "bedside manner." In other industries we call it customer service. This is a soft skill that must be learned.
