About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Activity

Absolutely! Nothing is more effective than strong & careful preparation. I also liked your point about being yourself. I see too many speakers who are trying to be somebody else & no matter how effective that other person is, if it's not authentic, it doesn't work. Confidence definitely comes from preparation. Ryan
I think this is a great approach. Especially with a group who, I'm guessing, many of them are not there voluntarily. Demonstrating that concern for them & also tailoring the message to meet their needs rather than a totally canned presentation is very effective. Great job. Ryan
Great example of negotiating in a "non-traditional" setting. Yet the skills are still very needed. Ryan
Great points. I heard an interesting statement today: Trying to be right is a learning disability. I think that applies here in that if we seek to "be right" we are not as willing to listen to others & their views. Ryan
I agree, and that concept of "expertise" is so subjective isn't it? Working to truly show you have knowledge of the subject area is vital. Ryan
I find it very helpful to gather as much information about the audience as possible. In this way, I can more intelligently speak to their concerns, etc. Great points. Ryan
Great points. I have found another effective way is to allow the others space to articulate what exactly about this situation, proposal, etc is bothering them. This helps both parties to get clear on where the concern & fears are so they can be addressed appropriately. Ryan
Great points. I had an interesting conversation with a leader regarding this today. The point was made that sometimes the individuals we are talking to simply repeat as their goals what they've always been told: i.e. I want to be in a supervisory position. Yet often we can help them the most by getting clear as to whether they actually desire this, or feel this is the expectation for them. Great job, Ryan
I have definitely been there myself. Definitely important that an instructor is aware of the negotiation tactics so they are prepared to engage in a good conversation/discussion with their students on this topic. How else do you see yourself using negotiation tactics on a regular basis? Ryan
I agree that experience is a great way for building credibility. I also believe that it is important to demonstrate your own integrity & your interest in the other person's agenda to help build credibility. This does not mean that you have to give in or buy in, but you acknowledge them by hearing them out. Ryan
