About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Good list. I would add understanding how they approach an authority figure. Some cultures discourage that interaction with an instructor as you are an honored person. They may need help but not asking for it. Ryan
You bet! Keeping them informed on how they are doing is a key part to helping these learners succeed. Ryan
Great point on this Glenda. When we listen to the experiences of our students we are creating a great learning environment as it helps them to feel valued. Ryan

Absolutely! And learning groups also help them learn how to truly listen to the ideas/opinions of another, even when they disagree. Ryan
Great observation. It especially helps to see the potential lack of understanding in those students who may not be as eager to let on that they don't understand. Ryan
I also think "forcing" the students to use these skills in our classes as much as possible will help them. Be understanding & patient, but also force them to use good grammar & sentence structure (speaking & writing) regardless of the core content. Ryan
You're right on both levels. Movement is good, but it must not be annoying or distracting. Ryan
Great thinking here. I've found that I can even use some of my own real life examples as case studies for the students. Set up the situation & have them work through what should've been done. Then you can debrief as to how it really played out & this can be powerful. Ryan
Discussion Comment
John, Great approach. This illustrates what many of us have experienced in teaching, the more we teach the better we know the material ourselves. Ryan
Good question. I really don't think we can "overcome" it. Rather I think we must address this as a real fear, a legitimate fear & then deal with it from there. If you are diagnosed with cancer, you have a justifiable fear of dying. Yet you don't want to let that fear dominate you, but you want to seek treatment, fight with all you have, love your family more, do your bucket list, etc. You cannot choose whether you fear or not, but you can choose whether to let it dominate your life.
