About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Sharron, Thank you for the great advice regarding colors. This was something I had not thought about before but definitely can use this. Ryan
David, This is a great strategy. I too like to keep up on my industry & like you said show how the past still applies. Even if we don't know where the latest trend is headed, just talking about it shows our students we are staying up to date. Ryan
Karen, Great point you make here. I agree that we need to talk with these students & find out what approach has worked best for them in the past. Through this we get to know them & also hopefully are more helpful to them. Ryan
Tara, You are so right. Eye contact can serve a wonderful purpose on both ends. For those students who need some reassurance it can be a great way to demonstrate care & concern. And for those students who may be challenging us, direct eye contact can, as you said, be a statement of authority & confidence. Ryan
William, Could you elaborate a little more? How do you work through the feeling that these students are overwhelming your patience? Ryan
Karl, Great strategy on working with groups. I like the approach of giving them the time frame, etc & letting them work. Especially with adults/young adults they need to learn to work toward a deadline & manage their work accordingly. I also like to move from group to group to ensure they are on task. Ryan
Karl, Thank you for the reminders, especially in regard to having our backs to the students. I started off life in drama & this is a cardinal rule in theater, never turn your back to the audience. I think the same applies to our students for the reasons you stated. Ryan
William, You make some great points in your post. I like your point about not talking over our students' heads. Our job is not to show them how "smart" we are but to help them learn. Ryan
Yes, any time we can create groups like this where we ensure that every member has a job to do, they are even more successful. Ryan
Yes & great job of focusing on helping students & going the extra mile when needed. That step of recapping to fill in the gaps is a huge benefit. Ryan
