About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

NATELLE , This certainly does help create a comfortable environment & the more comfortable we are as instructors the more comfortable our students will be in the classroom. Dr. Ryan Meers
Katherine, I think this is a great example of when bottom up goal setting provides a valuable resource to a team & organization. Dr. Ryan Meers

Patricia, Definitely the skills of coaching can be used in a variety of settings & I agree that they can be used to help people change their health habits. I think the key with any coaching conversation is to remember that it is the "coachee" who has to change, I can't change anyone. Dr. Ryan Meers
Anjali, This is outstanding! I love how you are using a variety of techniques to help your students learn the content they need, not just for the class but for true success in the fast-paced world of culinary arts. Dr. Ryan Meers
david, This is a great observation & I think helps the students to learn how important it is for them to engage others in dialogue so they can truly get to know the other person. Dr. Ryan Meers
amina, This is a great strategy. I try to incorporate one new teaching method I've never used before in every class & then try to reflect on how it went & how it could be improved. Dr. Ryan Meers
david, Isn't it interesting that when we do this we sometimes feel as if we aren't using class time effectively? Yet in reality this is a great way for the students to connect class content to real issues. Dr. Ryan Meers
david, With the amount of information available, literally at our fingertips, it really is fairly easy to stay up to date with new trends that impact our field. I try to pay attention to trends that aren't directly related to my field but that seem as if they will have an impact. Dr. Ryan Meers
Erik, I think this brings up an interesting point, sometimes we may need to be okay with & help our students be okay with the fact that they aren't good test takers, but they can perform well in other areas & therefore it balances out. Dr. Ryan Meers
Roy, I think this is a very insightful observation. I wonder if it's because they've not developed those abilities to analyze the content for the day & decide which book to bring? I wonder if these are the same students who tend to highlight the whole page, which results in no information standing out & then they are confused as to what to study? Great observation...
