About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Activity

Hazelyn, yes this is a great observation. Even if the students don't have questions it lets them know that we're open to their questions. Dr. Ryan Meers
Demarcus, this is very true. I would say that I have found certain topics or situations are aided by my having a seat on the same level as the students. These are rare & really I think, as you point out, it's the variety that really helps. Dr. Ryan Meers
Henry, very true. I have also found that it helps me to be more energetic & excited about what I'm saying which in turn helps the students. Dr. Ryan Meers
Timothy, you've pointed out a couple of great reasons to move around the classroom. Whether it's behind the desk or podium, we seem to be more detached if we're not moving around. Also, it really does help us pick up on certain difficulties that students might be experiencing with sight lines, visuals, etc. Dr. Ryan Meers
Mitchell, to be honest the first step really is awareness. Now what you need to do is try to become self-aware & realize when you are doing this. This can help you pinpoint more of the "why" you might be doing this. You might want a peer to observe you & he/she can help you pinpoint better. Best wishes with this! Dr. Ryan Meers
Petulah, it sounds like you've really hit on the best way to build their confidence while at the same time helping them realize that they can do this on their own. Dr. Ryan Meers
Charmelia, I have found that if I keep this in mind & focus on having a variety of instructional techniques it is helpful to all students. Dr. Ryan Meers
Demarcus, this is very true & something I have tried to point out in this same discussion. Dr. Ryan Meers
Henry, very, very true. There is a fine line between engaging a student with eye contact & intimidating them, thanks for the reminder. Dr. Ryan Meers
Henry, the voice definitely is key to being an effective instructor & carrying the power we desire. Dr. Ryan Meers
