About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Paula, yes, I like to think of it that you are giving the students a peg on which to hang the theoretical concepts. Dr. Ryan Meers
Quebec, that is a great example of how this can help. When I was teaching World History to high schoolers, I was amazed at how many times "Joe Egyptian" (a pretend guy I made up in class to illustrate a point) showed up in essay questions. Dr. Ryan Meers
Jennifer, I agree with you & have this to be true too. The more I move around, the more energetic & "connected" I am with the lecture content. Dr. Ryan Meers
Joseph, great point here! When we act nervous about speaking in the classroom that is often translated as lack of knowledge or expertise in the field. We have to be aware of what we are communicating. Dr. Ryan Meers
David, this is great & I too have found this to be true. While I haven't taught online in this way, I have done this when on lengthy conference calls. Dr. Ryan Meers
James, I definitely think it will help you to develop a better rapport. I would say for your position a big part of this will be in demonstrating (physically & communicatively) your openness to the students. Dr. Ryan Meers
Crystal, this is definitely a challenge. A couple of things you might want to try: 1) make it clear that you do not allow this behavior while you are lecturing & follow up on that; 2) periodically ask questions in your lecture, this might help keep all students engaged with what you are discussing. Paula, so glad that the information is already proving useful. It is difficult to make ourselves do this, but very important, keep at it! Dr. Ryan Meers
Linsey, being concise & to the point is definitely a learned skill. Keep after it & I'm sure you'll get it. Dr. Ryan Meers
Iolanda, this is a challenge for many of us, especially when we are so familiar with the material. We have to remember that they don't know the information nearly as well as we do. Dr. Ryan Meers
