About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Activity

Warren, you are so right. No matter how "smart" we are, we must have those interpersonal skills. Dr. Ryan Meers
Kathryn, I agree with your comments here & have found these to be true in my experience as well. Dr. Ryan Meers
Kelly, I do give my students rubrics & actually walk them through the rubric. I try to point out how the rubrics will be totaled so they aren't just going with "gut" but thinking about how they translate into a grade. Dr. Ryan Meers
Garry, I think you hit on an important idea here. We want to keep the lectures "moving" & I have found that sometimes my physical movement helps with actually moving the lectures too. Dr. Ryan Meers
Shannon, you hit on many great aspects of good communication here. I like to emphasize that aspect of speaking clearly as it is so vital, especially in classes with an ethnically diverse student group. Dr. Ryan Meers
Gilbert, yes our body language is a key to reinforcing what we say & especially if we want to portray an attitude of openness. Dr. Ryan Meers
Kelly, I agree that humor is definitely a useful tool & can greatly aid in retention for our students. Dr. Ryan Meers
Kelly, Great discussion question you pose. I completely agree that prep is the key to effective delivery & effective instruction. I like to review all of the relevant & leading materials on the topic so I know I have a good foundation for the content. Dr. Ryan Meers
Melissa, I completely agree with you & your strategy. A true audience analysis is best, but there are times when this isn't possible. That's when, like you said, you want to think through who the audience might be & adapt your presentation accordingly. Dr. Ryan Meers
Nicholas, it is interesting that some of the educational programs that schools are using for classes are incorporating some of the features of social networks. Dr. Ryan Meers
