About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Maurice, you are very right that clarity in our communication is a very important skill. Dr. Ryan Meers
Discussion Comment
Warren, yes and often effective management opens the door for effective coaching. Dr. Ryan Meers
Summer, you make a good point here. I think the point is that too many of the older styles of teaching depended upon the instructor talking for an hour. You stated that Gen Y can be engaged in a discussion for an hour. Exactly the point we are trying to make. That is "mixing it up" compared to the instructor standing up & talking for lengthy periods of time. Dr. Ryan Meers
James, great illustration & you are right that the "why" is very important to this generation. Dr. Ryan Meers
Carlton, well put! This information is a launching point to better engage students. Dr. Ryan Meers
Lisa, I agree that the key is making sure that we understand the generations, but don't overlook the individual students. Dr. Ryan Meers
Carlton, I agree with you here. We spend a lot of time talking about how to reach Gen Y, I think we also need to help Gen Y understand how to reach others. Dr. Ryan Meers
Franz, yes there is definitely a seeming "addiction" to cell phones. I think this can be used in the learning environment, but must be closely monitored. Dr. Ryan Meers
Lisa, utitilizing technology in an effective & intelligent way is definitely a great strategy for reaching these learners. Dr. Ryan Meers
Summer, I agree that the best strategy, when we can, is to directly discuss with our students how they learn & the best way for them to learn. Dr. Ryan Meers
