About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Howard , I agree that there are many positives from work groups & we need to be sure to remind our students of these as many students do not appreciate the group work. Dr. Ryan Meers
Deb, I agree that this is a nice feature when we can provide this time with us present. I also like to encourage my students to meet outside of class, just so they understand that you do have to sacrifice some time & negotiate meetings as a group. Dr. Ryan Meers
Hank, I think this is a good approach & one that also represents some real life situations. Many of my "real" group projects had different check-in points & certain portions or deliverables were due at different times. Dr. Ryan Meers
Kelsey, I agree that this is the best approach to take. In this way there is some accountability for working together, yet at the same time the "slackers" can't depend on the diligent students for the whole grade. Dr. Ryan Meers
Kelsey, I think this is a great approach & while they may still not love the groups, they at least have to recognize that these are part of the work world reality! Dr. Ryan Meers
Tim, I agree that anytime we can provide some means of making the instruction more personal, the better the chance of retention & understanding by our students. Dr. Ryan Meers
Deb, good awareness on this point. Too often we tend to get nervous & speed up if we think the students aren't "getting it" & as a result we often confuse them even more. Dr. Ryan Meers
Mary, yes anytime when we can throw some movement into the lecture it helps to keep the students engaged. Dr. Ryan Meers
JODY, yes that positive tone & strong eye contact are important features in connecting with our students. Dr. Ryan Meers
Deepika , you are right that these group activities can really help build the unity of the group & aid in their learning. Dr. Ryan Meers
