About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Brenda, I agree with you that we need to make sure we are flexible enough in our approach to the student groups so we are adaptable to the situation. Dr. Ryan Meers
Linda, yes, the designation of specific duties & tasks is a great way to ensure that all members are actively contributing. Dr. Ryan Meers
Bruce, this is a great reminder of some of the things we need to be aware of as we are forming or allowing the students to form the work groups. Dr. Ryan Meers
Linda, this is an ongoing challenge. If possible, I would think about making participation part of the grade for the course & making the participation heavily focused on the reading. This might help force the students to do more of the reading ahead of time. Dr. Ryan Meers
Bruce, I like what you said here, especially the last point about making sure the students know we are here to help them succeed. This is critical as too often the students do not feel like they can approach the instructor or that they are bothering them . Dr. Ryan Meers
Nicole, you are right that these are great techniques to keep all of your students engaged in the lecture & in the class. Dr. Ryan Meers
Ronald, I agree that as the leader you cannot have "best friends" as your direct reports and I do think you need to be friendly to your direct reports. Dr. Ryan Meers
Jodi, yes, the more we can break up the monotony of the longer lectures, it seems the more these students pay better attention. Dr. Ryan Meers

Amelia, I think this is a good way to incorporate the use of technology. As you said, it can get tricky at times & obviously the use has to be carefully monitored. Dr. Ryan Meers
