About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Felecia, this is a great way to check on that individual work as well as to remind the students that you are checking up on them. Dr. Ryan Meers
Kathleen , these are all common complaints. For some the response is that they really need to learn to work in groups as that is where much of the work environment is today. As for the comment about learning from a professor; then they should be willing to submit to the greater expertise of the prof & if he/she thinks a group is best then that is what we go with. Dr. Ryan Meers
Carl, I completely agree with you. Subject matter knowledge, obviously, is a must, but we must know how to effectively communicate that knowledge. Dr. Ryan Meers
Discussion Comment
Rachel, I agree that coaching is primarily focused on the improvement & progress of the person. Dr. Ryan Meers
Amanda , yes & part of our job is helping them learn how to listen, debate, dialogue, etc while still respecting the opinions & freedom of expression of others. Dr. Ryan Meers
Amanda , I agree that Twitter can be a useful tool; however, as you point out, we want to be very cautious in any kind of use during an actual class as the students will quickly become distracted. (Also, goes without saying, make sure you are not violating any school policies.) Dr. Ryan Meers
Miriam, this is so very true. We need to help them learn & maintain good, interpersonal com skills. Dr. Ryan Meers
Amanda , yes & allowing them to learn from one another (while sometimes difficult) can eventually be very rewarding for both groups. Dr. Ryan Meers
bobbe, yes, requiring a good reference list, to me, is essential. I also like to require them to have a variety of sources: some internet, some journals, some books, etc. This way they learn there are a variety of resources available. Dr. Ryan Meers
Amy, you make a great point here. While we want to meet the Gen Y learner where they are & provide that immediate feedback, it is vital that they also develop the ability to see the big picture & see how the individual parts fit into the whole. Dr. Ryan Meers
