About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Phil, unfortunately in today's environment it is somewhat challenging to distinguish which students truly have an LD & which are taking advantage of certain situations. Dr. Ryan Meers
Kathleen , so true & it helps these adult learners to feel like a valuable part of the learning environment. Dr. Ryan Meers
Dale, I agree with you & use some form of outline. I know some instructors who view this as spoonfeeding or old fashioned but I still outline my own notes when listening to a presentation of some kind. Dr. Ryan Meers
Discussion Comment
Dawn, and I've seen situations where the class, as a whole, is much more open after group work. Dr. Ryan Meers
Adrienne , thank you for bringing up a challenge that I don't believe we've addressed before. I think the ice-breakers are good; I would also suggest seeing if any of the students have another student in the class that they already know. If they've been in classes with them previously & have a good relationship it might be good to have them in the same group. Dr. Ryan Meers
Juanita, this is an excellent reason to use those examples as it will help them see the relevance. I was talking with my neighbor who is a Sheriff's deputy & he commented on how now he sees the importance of a public speaking course & math! Dr. Ryan Meers
Adrienne , it is very insightful to go to other classes & then use what we see there to ask ourselves what may be going on in our own classes. Dr. Ryan Meers
Dawn, great point made here. I've stated it before, but we cannot content ourselves with being subject matter experts but need to realize that part of our job as a classroom instructor is to engage the students & be somewhat interesting. Dr. Ryan Meers
Jessica, yes, a good strong audience analysis is the key to a highly effective presentation. Dr. Ryan Meers
Todd, unfortunately this is an all too common situation. We have to really work to help them realize that they cannot always shortcut, at least not until they've learned the long way. Dr. Ryan Meers
