About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Activity

Betty, yes, this is a very common learning disability & too often goes unnoticed or the student does not get the help he/she needs. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Betty, yes, the emphasis needs to be on talking, talking to multiple parties so we know how to best help all of them. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Roshally, it really is important in today's diverse classroom setting that we understand the various cultures that are represented & make an effort to get to know more about them. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Tracy, this is an excellent point. One of the best ways we can help the struggling learners is to demonstrate our willingness to help them so they will seek our help. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Christina-Rose, this is a great strategy as it provides that summative evaluation all along the way & you're able to quickly readjust/redirect. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Discussion Comment
Jon, this is very true. And many jobs now involve working in groups or a team setting & so these experiences will help prepare our students for the future. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Sunshine, I think you're right that the evaluation of the individual effort can be particularly challenging in the online environment. I believe the key is the active participation & monitoring by the instructor. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Nichole , this is so true & I feel the emphasis needs to be on our duty as the instructor. Too often we just sit back rather than keeping on top of the groups & monitoring the activity. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Anita, yes, case studies (examples) provide a powerful way for the students to learn from real situations. We can set up the story & then hold back on what happened & ask them to think through it & provide suggestions. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
