About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Activity

Melissa, this is very true. If the student has an identified disability & they are willing to disclose the specific nature, we can be in a much better position to help them in our classes. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Phil, this is an excellent point. Students who have learning disabilities are not any less intelligent, they simply learn differently. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Douglas, I think this is a great strategy to really get to know your students & so you are in a much better position to understand them & help them as individuals. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Dyana, and this requires that we get to know each of our students as individuals & truly understand them in that way. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Kelly, yes, this is an excellent point. Sometimes we feel if we just repeat the information more slowly & louder then they'll "get it." We need to communicate with them & discover how the information needs to be delivered to help it stick. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Discussion Comment
Jason, these are great outcomes from the group work. I too have seen this happen & they really can be positive for those students who may not have learned as much from me. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
John, I think this is a good strategy to use to make sure that none of the group members do feel left out or ignored as this feeling will be carried into the project. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Mary, I agree that this is a good approach. While we are developing skills for the workplace, many students are not yet mature enough in these skills to split up duties on their own. When we can help with this structure & division of duties it typically helps the projects & the groups to be more successful. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
gina, I agree that the eye contact with students really does open up a communication channel with our students & helps them to feel included & encourages communication. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Dyana, I have found this to be one of the key factors in a successful class for all of us. Too often I think I'm being clear but I'm confusing my students. You are right that we must strive for clarity & asking our students is a great way to determine if we are being clear or not. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
