About me

I've been a career educator for over 20 years. I currently serve as the Academic Coordinator for Brookstone College of Business and continue to be active in the classroom as a Business Instructor. My motto is "A student doesn't care how much you know, until they know how much you care." I was honored to receive the Career College Association National Teacher of the Year award in 2001. I just love teaching!

Activity

Hi Teresa,

Locking the door and making them wait until the next break will certainly get their attention as well as the attention of others.  The students will know that you are not playing, and they will stop this nonsense.  Try it, you will see an improvement in punctuality after breaks.

Hi David, What a great scenario to have students do as the scenario applies to the real world. You made me think as a customer with your response. I can see how this activity can generate much critical thinking. Patricia Scales
Hi Jennifer, That's right! Students do not need another friend, but they need as many role models as possible. Patricia Scales
Hi Stephanie, We should never speak negatively about an instructor in front of students. We must all be on the same playing field and support each other. If there is a concern with an instructor, go to that instructor. Patricia Scales
Hi Kaley, An impression is everything, good or bad! Students are very judgmental, let's make a great first impression. Patricia Scales
Hi Denise, We have to practice what we preach! Anxiety is normal, we just have to control it like we share with our students. Patricia Scales
Hi Trina, Trust is a factor, but even some students you place full trust in will try to take short cuts, which can be very disappointing. Patricia Scales
Hi Dan, Have a private firm conversation with her to let her know that you have discovered her potential, and you want to see her use her potential to the fullest level. Document the conversation and let her know it will be placed in her file so that she knows how serious you are. Patricia Scales
Hi Jason, It is always good to check with the student first to get permission to showcase their work. I have known instructors to not share the students name when showcasing a student's work. Patricia Scales
Hi Erica, Sahring an example serves as great protection because by showing an example you know you told them everything. Patricia Scales
