About me

I've been a career educator for over 20 years. I currently serve as the Academic Coordinator for Brookstone College of Business and continue to be active in the classroom as a Business Instructor. My motto is "A student doesn't care how much you know, until they know how much you care." I was honored to receive the Career College Association National Teacher of the Year award in 2001. I just love teaching!

Activity

Hi Sheila, Case studies are very effective in preparing students for things they will encounter in the real world. Students really have to do a lot of thinking when it comes to case studies because the answer is not in the book. Patricia Scales
Hi Claire, Students really have to use their own knowledge/experience with case studies. Case studies are good in preparing students for the real world. Students will encounter various situations in the real world. Patricia Scales
Hi James, You never know unless you try! Keep being creative and thinking out of the box. Most students like variety! Patricia Scales
Hi Holly, I understand! I felt the same way when I first started 25 years ago. With time you will become faster. Remember, the first time you do anything whether it is teaching a chapter, creating an exam, etc. it is going to take you longer because of the unknown. Time will be on your side soon. Hang in there and talk to your DOE about a mentor. Patricia Scales
Hi Georgina, That's right1 Students really need to see us as role models not friends. Our students need people in their lives that are going to help put them on the right path. Practice what you preach and be the role model that you want your students to become. Patricia Scales
Hi Richard, Sudents enjoy hearing about real world experience. They want to know what it is like in the workplace. Patricia Scales
Hi Pauletta, Yes, guest speakers shed light on a lot of different perspective in a positive way. Students are rejuvenated after having a guest speaker. Some students get their groove back from hearing guest speakers. Patricia Scales
Hi Morris, No one likes being bored. Long drawn out lectures are just too boring. We have to add excitement to our courses. Guest speakers are a great idea, and I have found students love doing hands-on activities as well. Patricia Scales
Hi Georgina, Students need to keep their eyes on the prize, the big picture. Students become more interested in the course when they understand the benefit. Patricia Scales
Hi Larry, When students can tie what they are learning into their career, they understand the relevancy. Students need to know how things are going to be in the workplace. Patricia Scales
