About me

I have more than 20 years in higher education. My career has centered on knowing the issues that can and will affect education at all levels and doing what I can to insure that change is positive for learners and their communities. I have been teaching on-line for four years with two different institutions. I am very interested in learning new and better ways of using technology to enhance students' learning experiences.

Activity

Effective on-line instruction needs multiple assessment tools. Not every student will be able to take a quiz and show what he/she has learned. I strive to give students multiple and varied opportunities to apply new knowledge and skills.
I think I enjoy on-line teaching so much because I was always better at the "guide on the side" role. I taught writing for years and that subject just doesn't need as much lecture by an expert as it needs "hand-on" application and practice.
I have only used a synchronous method once, several years ago. My nontraditional students seem happy with the asynchronous courses but I wonder if adding an optional synchronous facet might be fun?
Discussion Comment
I have not used screen capture except to diagnose problems students are encountering. I am excited to learn about other uses!
Discussion Comment
I really like using rubrics but I don't like the "band wagon" approach that every student activity needs a rubric or that one great rubric should be used for every assignment, i believe that different learning activities require specific rubrics. If done en mass, we may as well simply use "Meets all expectations, meets some expectations and meets few expectations." What do others think?
