It is important to understand the background and diversity of the class as a whole. With the potential age differences the instructor has to remain cognizant of the life stages and challenges that go with those stages of life. The instructor also has to remain cognizant of the unique challenges associated with the different life stages.

That it is important to vary delivery types and styles to keep students engaged. I also learned that most adults have an attention span of 15 to 18 minutes. With this knowledge I see that it is imperative to change up delivery types and styles and will create a plan to do just that.

That it is important to create an open and welcoming environment for students especially on the first day of class. Implementing ice breakers and class participation in these types of events is imperative to developing a relaxed atmosphere where students learn better. It is also important to set course and classroom guidelines for students to understand and follow.

Planning and preparation for class are essential to displaying professionalism to students as well as creating a flow with fewer interruptions. Well prepared instruction equals less stress and better learning.  

Being an effective instructor is a combination of demonstrating professionalism as role model, a people manager and as a motivator of the subject and more. Many of the students entering this field are young and impressionable which is why it's so important to take these roles seriously as you could have an effect on them, good or bad, that they may carry throughout their career and life in general. 

This passage reiterates that Section 504 and the ADA provide equal opportunities and access for all students but not guaranteed success. 

That numerous types of disabilities and/or disorders are included as part of a protected class. 

People with disabilities have rights that provide accommodations but not necessarily anything specific such as, an automatic door, or large viewing screen, etc. Items such as these are provided, if necessary, to accommodate an individual but are not automatic.

I learned that military recruiters can gain access to some address, biographical, and academic program information on students aged 17 and older. This is done through the Solomon Amendment. The D.O.E. has determined that the Solomon Amendment supersedes most elements of FERPA. 

When a records request is submitted, an institution is allowed to charge a reasonable fee to cover the cost of copying and postage but they cannot charge for attainment of the records. Fees must not prevent a student from inspecting and reviewing their educational records.
