Hi Daniel - Making sure to ask the more shy students questions that you know they can answer is the key - at least in the beginning. Once they gain confidence they will be better able to take on any question. Susan
Hi Daniel - I so agree - when students get the relevancy of what we are teaching, they are more willing to learn. Susan
Hi Pamela - Thanks for your post to the forum. You gave a great description of an open discussion with your students which is an excellent tool. Why must we just lecture all the time?? Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
Hi Kyle - Thanks for your post to the forum. i agree that working in small groups is so much more effective, especially when teaching skills. I wish we had more opportunities to do so! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
Hi Anthony- Thanks for your post to the forum. As with any performance, the "First Act" often sets the tone for the rest of the play, so as you point out, we need to make a great impression from the start. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
Hi Heather - Thanks for your post to the forum. I liked your idea of the research questions which will put the students in a postion of confidence once the discussion begins. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
Hi Padmini - Thanks for your post to the forum. As you point out, we need to be very supportive of our students because, clearly, they are here because they want to learn. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
Hi Chris - Thanks for your post to the forum. I agree that asking questions post-lecture can be used to have students think through the material they have just learned. This use of critical thinking about that material will increase their retention of the material as well as their ability to apply it. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
Hi Carol - Thanks for your post to the forum. I really like your "post-it" study strategy - Thanks for sharing! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
Hi Daniel - It is more difficult to use short answer questions for the reason that you cite. Unless we are very careful to write a question that can only have ONE correct answer, we will encounter arguments. Best wishes- Susan
