Activity

I will start making recap notes on my lesson plans to address any mistakes made in class during lecture.

I have learned that walking the classroom during an exam may be disruptive to student testing (although it is recommended at our institution). Also, to be mindful of angry students and remove yourself from threatening situations.

For this section, I learned the importance of accountability in the classroom as well as for assignment dates. I also learned that even in college courses, assigned seating may be utilized. I also would move the class seating assignments routinely as well as implement activities and ask challenging students questions afterwards.

So far in this course on Classroom management, I have learned and will implement:

Descibe to the students what’s in it for them - how successful complete will help them in their career field. Also, I will have a Quiz activity to complete individually, then group students to review together.  I will also Define expectations, have a class Ice breaker, and provide Multiple reminders about due assignment dates to ensure timely submissions and avoid appeals that state they didn’t know when assignments were due.

My goals now that I’ve completed this course are to implement more discussion questions to spur ongoing communication between learners. I’ve learned that the quiet learners benefit from this, as well as personal messages to each student to ensure they are aware of how much I value their success.

Learning environments can be as diverse as their participants and require instructor moderation and influence. Students often benefit from guidance and reminders to help ensure they meet requirements.

Engagement is vital in learning and requires active instructional oversight to stimulate and influence meaningful discussions.

I have learned the importance of knowing your course management system well and utilizing technical support as needed to help track student activity and engagement. I have also learned the importance of instructor engagement to facilitate student learning.

Developing Content

In this section, I learned that perhaps I could record myself teaching to catch potential bad habits and find ways to improve my delivery. I know I sometimes say “um” often, which is a bad habit. I also like the idea of using a decision tree to lay out the topics/concepts as they are covered.

I appreciate the recommendation to take a picture of the class / use headshots of est student to place a name with their face to remember names. It is always difficult for me at first to remember names. I also plan to start using the recommendation of having a “get to know you” segment at the beginning of the first class. Since I am teaching a class in BSN students’ 9th semester, they mostly already know each other. However, using creative games, they may learn more and be able to connect better moving forward - even if they’ve been together… >>>
