I have delt with students like this and what i do is walk over to the student and ask them a question on the topic i was just going over, usualy that triggers them into being more active in class. 

In my experiances for day 1 I try to ease the stress of the student and let them know exactly how to succed in their studys.

Watchig this training, is helping me implement new ideas in the classroom, to help ingage and keep the students happy and learing. What a great course.
