About me

Hello. I am an online nursing educator.

Activity

Ensure you are reviewing all the possible tools available and analyzing the pros and cons of each before making a choice. Using the wrong tools can hinder student learning and affect their ability to show progress.

I think knowing a bit about the different generational groups is very helpful in communication with students. In my experience, I have seen differences between the groups. The older students often do need a little more support to ensure they know how to use the course tools. All students have equal ability, some just need a bit more help at the start.

In a time when many new applications or communication tools are available, I think it is really important to determine the best tools to use. I am glad the content in this course said an instructor doesn't have to use all of the tools available to him/her. Students can easily become overwhelmed if too many tools are being used. The instructor will possibly be overwhelmed, also. Finding the right tools for effectiveness is really the key. I liked the recommendation to evaluate every 3-5 weeks, too. Online students need to voice when tools aren't working but may not feel comfortable… >>>

I used to be worried that a simple layout would be boring to students. However, as I have learned in this module, the content does need to be provided in a manner that is easy for students to access. The content should be in short, accessible methods. Updating is also easier in this way.

Reflection on your course and facilitation plan after each session or maybe even after each module is helpful. Aspects to reflect on include: course structure, meeting learning needs, students' comfort with technology, the feedback provided, and your own leadership in the course.

Communication and ensuring students review and have an understanding of the course learning objectives are so important. Using the learning management system to ensure consistency assists the students in developing a comfort level with the course and enhances their learning.

Taking time to learn how to use the various technology features of the LMS is important. I find that the more I learn about new tools, the more options I have for learning activities. There are students with various learning styles in our courses so the more tools we have, the better for their learning.

The multiple aspects to review when evaluating a course are important. Faculty are generally evaluated by how many students succeed and how many fail. However, all learning activities and methods of evaluation must be considered.

Formative assessment throughout the module is very important for student learning. In online learning, I have found that formative assessment can be made fun or creative through uses of videos, games, or case studies. Without adequate formative assessment, summative assessment may be very difficult for students. Rubrics are an excellent way to guide the students as they complete their assignments and ensure they are meeting the learning objectives/competencies.

I certainly try to use scaffolding in my courses. Building on concepts and tying them together is beneficial for students. Also, I work to participate in discussions without getting too involved and "telling" the students the answers or steer them in their decision-making. I find it hard to do. I am working on my Socratic questioning.
