I found it surprising that the Dept of Homeland security can walk through FERPA. I also found it noteworthy that HIPPA regs may not apply to institutions of higher learning, if that institution provides medical care for its student.

Employees who were formally students of the institution are not automatically allowed to view their records. The same process applies.

Faculty members need written consent to view another student's record. The student can provide written consent or can deny.

FERPA

Excellent. I learned that there are federal laws protecting the student's academic records. As an instructor, I will guard against disclosure of private information, including grades, to third parties. A student's records should be released only to the student, unless an employer needs it, and even then, it is the student's responsibility to procure such records.

One of the most important issues covered in this module is the definition of "consent"

It is important to have an unbiased investigation of any sexual violence/ harassment incident. It is good that the laws offer flexibility on how to conduct investigations. Getting victims help even while keeping their confidentiality as much as possible is a good move.

I believe our thinking should transcend from being not just a Responsible Employee but a Responsible Human. "If you see something, (or learn about an incident indirectly), title IX procedures should be implemented.

I agree with the legislation that passed to specifically protect minorities. Violence of any kind is not to be tolerated in a civilized society, especially institutions of higher learning. Since LGBTQ+ and women have been traditionally at higher risk of violence, especially sexual violence and discrimination, these Laws at the very least give possible perpetrators a chance to think over the legal repercussions of carrying out their crime. Victims of these types of crimes may take a small comfort in knowing justice will be served.
