As an instructor you have to be prepared to teach your class instead of worrying about things that may or may not happen.
When I happen to encounter a disruptive student in the class I ask them to recap what has just been discussed to see if they were actually paying attention.
It's important to get to know your students and what is relevant to them in order to possibly keep them engaged.
As the SME and classroom manager on the 1st day of class I typically introduce myself and then provide the students an opportunity to introduce themselves. Afterwards I will go over the course syllabus along with my expectations that I have for them. Along with letting them know that I am here to build them up not to tear them down.
It's important to vary your method of teaching in order to reach everyone in the class. Which I currently do in order to reach all of my students.
I usually introduce myself and provide information about myself, then I have the students introduce themselves. Afterwards I practice pronouncing their names.
I always arrive 30 minutes early for class in order to adequately prepare for the lesson and activities of the day. Along with being able to possibly trouble shoot any unforeseen problems.
As an allied health instructor I display a positive attitude and appearance to my colleagues and students, along with being prepared for class. However, I can make a better effort at greeting the students as they enter the classroom.
