Kami, I use questions all the time and more open-ended ones - this allows more critical thinking. I try to get participation from everyone and sometimes I call on the quiet students by name, in which case, I ask simple questions or ones seeking opinions. If someone seems stuck or hesitant, I open the question to the class in a way that would not embarass the first student. I may say, "Who wants to share their opinion?" I always let students know that I do not have all the answers and I will try to get the answers for them.… >>>

Gregory, This is great advice! You seem to have much experience in teaching and it sounds like the students are privileged to be in your class. Judy Mohammed
Thomas, This is a great comparison question. Would you say it is an open-ended or close-ended question? Judy Mohammed
Gregory, It seems that you are doing a great job keeping your students engaged and giving much opportunity for critical thinking. I also use open-ended questions and this method encourages even the quiet students to participate. Judy Mohammed
Susan , These are very good examples. Do you use questions a lot in your lectures? Judy Mohammed
You seem to be doing very well, Diana. You are using the running notepad, which I employ often -jotting down notes as they come up during the lecture. This is most helpful and, with this practice, you will soon be doing things "on the fly."
I guess I am an "old school" teacher too because this is what I teach as well.
These are good examples, Donna. I have seen varainces in the rule for commas in a series. Which do you employ?
Very Good examples, Diana. Which do you use more of in your classes. open or closed questions?
It is easy to fall into the calling out trap. I ask my students to raise their hands, then I call on someone to respond. this is soemthing that I set up at eh beginning and I stop to take time to follow through on thsi method. I try to call on the quieter students even when their hands are not raised, especailly if the questions are not difficult.
