It is crtical for the good of the student that schools have a well defined mission statement and lead with trust and transparency.

I learned of the impact other laws and regulations can have on FERPA. It is important to know which regulations can supercede FERPA and to act accordingly when information is requested.

I learned FERPA not only protects the privacy rights of the student, but also ensures the student has access to their records in a timely manner. 

I have learned that I must understand the policies and procedures of FERPA and the importance of knowing when a record can be released and under what circumstances it can be released. In most cases taking the utmost caution and notifying the student about the disclosure is recommended. 

Understanding the importance of privacy rights this day and time is critical in managing online requests. Taking proper precautions in setting up the ability to verify the identity of the requestor is important for the school or institution providing the records.
