Michael, hard for me to assist you when I have not sat in the class so please take these recommendations with a grain of salt but I will provide what I can. The girls implied that they felt the lectures were boring. Did you take any opportunities to discuss with the remainder of the class? If the majority feel the course structure needed to be adjusted then that is where I would change things up. I had similar situations when teaching some technology courses back in 1999 and was new to working in the Higher Education classroom. Some of my… >>>

Bernie, I understand your point but there is another way to of thinking here. Not everyone has an issue being passed by someone doing 70 in a 55 zone as their focus is getting home safe versus worrying why others are speeding. For new instructors a best practice to consider is to discuss the course policies the first day of class. Also discuss proper disciplinary actions that are supported by students and then implement those actions when infractions take place. Remind students of the prior discussions and you are simply implementing their own directions to maintain a workable classroom environment. James Jackson
Patricia, well stated. Be personable but do not take the job personally. We all as educators put some of ourselves in our work and as such it can be easy to take things too personal. Having access to a good group of colleagues that can keep you grounded and you can discuss various situations can be a very helpful and at times therapeutic experience. James Jackson
James, awesome to hear. Allowing your students to be decision makers in the classroom gets them involved, engaged and interacting with your curriculum. Thanks for sharing. James Jackson
Michele, lead by example but also be human and provide for fair and consistent compliance with your classroom policies. One size does not fit all so avoid being robotic in your decision making processes. James Jackson
Servet, what traits can you share with respect to successful instructors? James Jackson
Heather, you may want to consider finding innovative ways to incorporate the use of cellular phones within the classroom. Texting quiz results or responses to classroom discussions could engage more of your students. Times are changing and we can either embrace change or struggle against it. James Jackson
Kimberly, well done and I look forward to hearing more about your progress. Getting students more engaged by finding innovative ways to get them involved and interactive with the curriculum will provide great results with respect to better student outcomes. James Jackson

Steven, another angle to consider on such issues is to find different ways to embrace such technology in the classroom and get students connected to your lessons plans through the use of such resources. If our students are more interested in their gadgets than they are in our message, forcing them to ignore these tools is not going to get us any closer to accomplishing our lesson objectives. By finding different ways to get students to make use of their gadgets within the classroom environment, we may be able to reach them in ways we never thought possible. James Jackson

jason, well stated. Each group of students and each student will act differently. Knowing your students and knowing how to regain their focus is important. One technique that is used is to include a discussion on day one of your classes that has each student describe how they feel the instructor should respond should that student be found not to be paying attention or behaving in an inappropriate manner. The instructor then can use these techniques later when students are not behaving in an appropriate manner. You can also remind them of the day one conversations and just use that… >>>
