Marybeth, knowledge is power as the saying goes and you are working to spread your knowledge to your students thus providing them the power to take more control over their lives. Tell them this is taking place and you will see a difference in many of your students. Sometimes they just need a better understanding of what you are doing for them and with them versus their initial thoughts of what they perceive as you are doing to them. Lead by example and being prepared for every lesson is a key element to earning your students trust and respect. James… >>>

Saundra, can you share some of your techniques for providing a polite yet firm disciplinary environment within your classroom? Your ideas and suggestions could be of great value to others reading these posts. Thanks for anything you can share. James Jackson
Mark, great comments here. I cringe anytime I visit a classroom and see an instructor standing in front of a room reading off PowerPoint slides. Students find this insulting and talking down to them versus being engaged and part of the lesson plan. The sage on the stage era of education is over and it is now about being the effective guide on the side. Get your students to be part of your lesson plans versus recipients of your words. Susan, some students are also just so competitive that they will argue a point that they even know they may not win simply to see if they can turn the decision in their favor. This is done to ensure the test takers… >>>

Daniel, another option for groups is to divide the class into sections of assignments that require different levels of monitoring. One group may be discussing a topic with a group leader you assign while another group is working hand-on where you are monitoring closely. James Jackson

kenneth, the first test should also be delivered with the maximum amount of instruction, explanation, and simulation. James Jackson

Tanya, great technique. I have also used a peer evaluation tool where students rate each other in an anonymous way. If one student is rated poorly by multiple individuals then you have a good understanding of which students are under-performing. James Jackson

Lee, the awesome thing here is you are willing to be critical of your own strategies. This shows me that you are working hard towards moving from a good instructor to a great instructor. Pat yourself on the back and understand these things take time. Greatness comes through hard work and a strategy to get you there, you seem to have this well in hand. : - ) As for the "leader of the pack" situation, best practice here is to have one-on-one discussions with your students that seem to want to take control in the classroom. As them directly… >>>
