mary, awesome job focusing on reaching beyond the minimum. I have always found value in discussing my grading rubrics with students and establishing clear guidelines as to what will be necessary to achieve each grade level. I also associate that excellent work results in the highest grade while good work is above average and fair work is average or the minimum to pass. These terms seem to resonate with students more than just letter grades. James Jackson
mary, I like your focus on getting some questions per chapter. What steps do you take to also ensure there are questions that address the objectives of the course? Another technique to consider is to know what level of bloom's taxonomy is required for the specific objectives and then have students provide the appropriate questions that address the required learning outcome and to what level of mastery. James Jackson
Gina, games and simulations are great learning tools. Especially the ones that keep track of strengths and weakness areas of the student's knowledge base. Such tools are also great for instructors to monitor high risk areas of knowledge where more course discussions may be needed based on the results of the instruments. James Jackson
Shanna, great technique as long as you are meeting the overall objectives of the course. When they develop their courses do you lay out any guidelines such as the number of questions within each learning objective of the class? Thanks for any additional information you can share. James Jackson

Roy, a buddy tends to be someone who will take your side on an issue or provide comfort when you are down. A guide is the person that takes you out of your comfort zone to take you to that next level of skill, knowledge, or ability. Dr. Joe Pace from The Pacific Institute would say to have an intelligent heart which is the guides that cares, this is still different from the buddy as it is explained in the course. Please share your thoughts here, it is OK to disagree and create some dialog here. Thanks for anything you… >>>

Sonny, glad you enjoyed the course and very excited to hear of your experiences as you implement these new techniques. Please visit back from time to time and share your experiences. James Jackson

Theodore, creating small winning scenarios can be successful in any learning environment. Computer courses may be an easy example but all learning objectives can be achieved by strategically creating small wins for students and then building upon these lessons learned. James Jackson
Eva, assessments are one of many tools that can be used to enhance the learning experience of students. Can you share any other techniques you have used as a learning tool other than assessments? James Jackson
Discussion Comment
Peter, excellent observation. Student diversity has been growing according to many of the instructors that participate in these discussions. Having an understanding of the different learning disorders can provide great insight and better allow you to understand your students. Where one instructor will assume a student is not motivated, another instructor with proper knowledge and understanding will be able to identify a learning limitation and apply different teaching techniques to better accommodate a student.
