Mary, letting your students know you are more like them and you too have to study and continue to learn makes the overall learning process more tangible to most students. James Jackson

Mary, pushing students outside their comfort zones is part of the learning process. You will want to be gradual in your process and provide ample opportunities for students go grow into the role of leadership but I do commend you on pushing the envelope of your student's comfort zones. Diane, assessments should be used to positively reinforce what a student has learned and provide the instructor with data that assists in determining possible changes to curriculum and different approaches towards achieving learning outcomes. Outside of those purposes I am not familiar with any other effective uses. Any level of using anything in a classroom as a threat tactic simply is not ethical. James Jackson
Mary, what an awesome idea and one I have never heard before so thanks for sharing. James Jackson
Allison, what have you learned from any conversations win your students on their reasons for sleeping in class or their outbursts? The more you understand what triggers such behaviors the better prepared you will be to manage your delivery techniques. James Jackson
Gail, all great traights. What traits do you focus upon and what steps do you take with each group of students to better develop your own traits? James Jackson

Mark, awesome that you relate your own experiences with your students. You become more of a person this way and students better appreciate that over time and effort they can be successful like you. James Jackson

Miriam, great point and I like your focus on helping students understand the importance of learning then practicing. Over time and effort the mastery will develop. The focus now is on learning and understanding so they may later apply and evaluate what they have learned. James Jackson

John, not always self inflicted. Some students simply were not provided the correct skills during adolescence and we as instructors may be one of their first positive role models. Be careful not to categorize too many students into the same category as this can cause you to lose focus on those students that need additional assistance through no fault of their own. Linh , this is very common and a great reason that we as instructors need to lead by example and always provide a positive focus for our students. You never know when a student will be ready to receive your message so you need to always be on your "A" game. James Jackson
