lisa, being prepared for class and incorporating current events are also critical traights. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. James Jackson
Wook, great idea and I agree that practice makes perfect. Providing students with several opportunities to practice taking assessments and learning from their outcomes can greatly assist students in becoming better test takers. Focus must be placed on assisting students in understanding the role the assessment plays in their overall learning and how the evaluation process is part of the overall learning process. Karyn, great use of practice makes perfect and learning from failure. Learning from failure should really be learning from doing but both get the meaning across. Other subject matter areas should take a look at Culinary Arts and focus on different ways students can learn from doing and engaging, hands-on activities. Just about any subject area can be enhanced through active learning activities. Thanks for sharing. James Jackson

Kristen, awesome tool and great way to be creative and innovative in your classroom. Can you provide some more specific examples of how you use this in your classrooms and any web sites, blogs, or wikis you have used to enhance your creative use of this exciting resource? Thanks for anything you can share. James Jackson

Mike, well stated and this is why proper planning of the curriculum goes a long way in ensuring student success. Creating the early wins and the ability to continually build upon the early success of easier lesson plans will provide great dividends. Knowing the desired learning outcomes and the level to which students need to have the knowledge transferred over is critical as well. A good knowledge of Bloom's Taxonomy (updated version) is essential in every instructor's tool kit. For a funny explanation of Bloom's Taxonomy and teaching methodology, check out this You Tube Video. http://youtu.be/NsBna5IVBYg. Let me know how… >>>

Eurico, great topic and I agree 100%. Properly preparing for classes and knowing how current events impact your subject matter translates into students feeling respected and they are receiving value for their time and money they invest in their education. James Jackson
charles, passion for the subject matter is really critical. Students can easily detect when an instructor is just teaching a topic or sharing information they truly enjoy. The focus here is to record yourself teaching your favorite topics then compare to videos you take teaching subjects that may not be your favorite. What steps do you need to take so your passion for your less favorite subject shine through as well as those topics you enjoy? James Jackson
Debra, thanks for sharing and I totally agree. The more you can provide your students with practice and removing the fear that one bad test does not prevent the achieving of a great course score can go a long way. The think-pair-share method has been successful for many classrooms throughout the country. Glad to see it is working for you as well. James Jackson
George, you are correct and you cannot resolve all of their issues. But you can show a level of concern and even provide some resources for them to consider. I always was very knowledgeable of the student services of any institution where I taught. Knowing how to direct students to get assistance is just as good as being the solution provider as you are the one taking the time to show them you car and what them to get the resources they need to be successful. Theresa, love your mention of the importance of humor. Having a good sense of the right amount of humor is key to effective learning. Students are more receptive to the learning process when their minds are at ease and relaxed which is what humor tends to provide. Thanks for sharing. James Jackson
