Tierra, preparing students to take tests is a critical skill and one that is missing in many institutions today. Helping students to better understand test taking strategies and providing them the tools they need to be successful is essential and expected. This is not to say you are teaching to a test, you are preparing your students to properly demonstrate their knowledge. James Jackson
Jeff, you have hit the nail square on the head. Set the stage of expectations early, inspect what you expect, and always be fair but firm. All common sayings but all are very true when it comes to getting control over your students early. James Jackson

Kerry, very true. Some of the greatest inventions came out of actual mistakes. The real trick is not to repeat your mistakes when nothing positive can result. An example is improper safety measures. Forgetting a safety measure once may be an opportunity to enhance learning but more than one violation of the same safety issue can result in catastrophic events taking place eventually. To error is human but to not learn from your mistakes is a true problem. James Jackson

Larry, providing students with case studies and sharing with them your own experiences are outstanding tools that lead to a higher level of understanding and self confidence in your students. Well done. James Jackson
Jane, you are actually practicing a very good form of assessment. The myth here is that a quiz has to be a written instrument when in fact assessments can come in many styles and forms. Assessment is simply a way of determining how well the knowledge transfer process has taken place so by your methodology of having students teach to the teacher on the subject materials, you are practicing a very good form of assessment. Thanks for sharing. James Jackson
Marc, you should look into the concept of scaffolding. This is a critical trait of a quality instructor. It is all about how you as an educator can build the bridges that connect the pieces together to bring student understanding to the lesson plan. Thanks for sharing. James Jackson
Becky, well stated. Learning can be fun. More work is required on the side of the instructor but the results are incredible and worth the additional effort. James Jackson
Saroj, this is really what the Guide is all about. If you are too controlling or too much of a buddy you can lose control over your classroom and your students but a guide knows when to provide the right level of control and buddy aspects into the classroom. You are there to educate your students and not to build lifelong friendships. The funny thing is, for those instructors that demand the best out of their students, many end up with life long relationships out of respect and adulation for the effort provided. James Jackson
Tina, proper preparation is easily noticable by students. If they perceive you are not prepared then they do not understand why they need to prepare or invest any energy on the course. Thanks for sharing. James Jackson

Rejandra, well stated. If students feel you are everywhere they are less able to get into trouble. Sitting behind a desk or never moving around just invites problems in any classroom. James Jackson
