Bruce, another technique is to make sure you use the testing results as a training tool. If students know they will be able to learn from their mistakes then they see the testing process as a more positive experience. If they get a question correct on a final exam that they missed on a quiz due to proper review and learning from their mistakes then they gain more confidence in the overall testing process. Michele, another factor is some individuals are just not good at taking tests. I am one of those individuals. You may also want to consider offering some type of optional training session for those students that just need to learn good strategies for test taking. This can also help to reduce the level of stress. James Jackson
Theodore, outstanding post. Students talk among themselves and the goal if any instructor is for students to promote your course to others. A course can have difficult content but be a favorite among the student body. If the instructor is engaging and prepares lesson plans around student interests then the students will participate and learn from the activities. James Jackson
gary, well stated. Students can easily identify when an instructor is passionate about a subject matter or they are just going through the motions to earn a paycheck. The great instructors are the ones that can engage their students through inspirational discussions and dialog versus just lecturing to their students. James Jackson

Mary, not sure I totally understand your question but I will make an attempt to provide a response. I will first assume that all members of the faculty are acting within the rules and policies of the institution. I will next assume that some programs have different internal rules and policies that are allowed within the rules and policies of the institution. With these two assumptions my response would be to assist students in understanding such is life. The rules that apply to the owners of a company will be different than their employees. Life is not fair and outside… >>>

Joseph, you are not required to answer questions about other students. It is really a very easy response and you just have to say that only the student involved is able to provide responses to such questions. You are there to answer questions about subject matter not to comment about private matters concerning students in your classroom. I would highly recommend you be very clear to those asking you to comment on such private matters, you cannot comment on such matters. James Jackson
Ronald, of course you need to conduct your classroom the best way you see fit. No class will satisfy the needs of all situations and all personalities. The purpose is to provide food for thought and get you interested in engaging in conversation to discuss the types of situations you encounter and how others handle those situations. If your students progress and are well prepared for future courses and eventually become graduates then there may not be anything you need to change. James Jackson
Dianne, great post. The best way to know how best to react to your students is to first know them and understand their needs. The more you understand their needs the better you can determine the role you need to play. I look forward to others who post to this discussion and read their comments. James Jackson
Sherry, thanks for sharing all the efforts you go through to prepare your students. Looks like other instructors could benefit from following the example you have set here. Can you also share some information about the results you have experienced such as percentage of students that pass your class and percentage of students that go on to do well in any additional courses where yours is a prerequisite? Thanks for anything you can share. James Jackson
Kenneth, while I agree with your statement it is also our responsibility as instructors to take students out of their comfort zones and challenge them to grow and move forward in their skills. Building a safe environment and making students feel they can ask any question is critical to their ability to reach beyond their areas of comfort and realize they are capable of more than they may actually realize.
