Sudarshan Daniel, thanks for sharing and I look forward to hearing more about what results you experience by implementing what you have learned by participating in the class. Please come back and share your experiences. James Jackson
Jennifer, when you have passion and it shines through in your lesson plans you lead by example and your students cannot help but to be motivated. James Jackson
Jennifer, knowing your students have been successful and played a role is one of the greatest feelings I know. Thanks for sharing. James Jackson

Randall, several great points. Helping students understand how we define adult education is a great technique and helps students understand what will be expected from them. Self reflection can take a deeper root when they have the tools they need to understand how they are in control of their own success. Thanks for sharing. James Jackson
Daniel, what you describe sounds like a curriculum and course design issue. Long term memory and subject mastery require deep engagement and students practicing what they learn and applying what they learn to various situations. Repetition and constant building upon previous concepts is critical. What techniques do you use to fully engage your students? James Jackson
Jacqueline, well stated and talks to the importance of leading by example. Instructors by their title are leaders but can diminish their role as a leader by not modeling the behavior they want from their students. Each class session is critical and your students deserve and demand your best at all times. James Jackson
Richard, you will do great. Just remember to be yourself and do not be afraid to try new things and learn from any failure. I have failed many times over my 20 year career as an educator and I have always received positive feedback from my students because I have been honest, humble, and respectful. No one is perfect and if students get to know you as a person and respect you as someone you is truly interested in their success, you will do very well. Stay in touch and let us know how things go. Craig, agreed. There are many tools that can assist in this area such as DiSK, Myers Briggs, and Hogan. All have their pros and cons but each can be helpful when used correctly. James Jackson

Chad, each situation will be different and rarely does one size fit all. If you are not finding success using small groups then do not use this technique. The takeaway is there is something out there that will work. You are not the first math instructor to experience students with less than desirable skills. Others have found success using a number of techniques and you will as well. Just do not give up experimenting with new techniques. Discuss with your colleagues what works for them and then apply what you can into your own situation. Your students are worth the… >>>

Bridget, well stated and accurate. Your goal is for students to know you care about their success in school. It is not about popularity or how many students invite you to their Facebook site. Mutual respect and building a safe learning environment is the target. James Jackson
