martin, looks like you are doing a good job setting the example and modeling the behavior you want from your students. Thanks for sharing. James Jackson
Chris, great job relating the class materials to the career fields of students. Some students do not understand how all classes related to their career but by making this relationship very obvious you can truly motivate some students to take a stronger interest in your class. James Jackson
Sally, passion shows and also a lack of passion shows. Students are very aware of those instructors that are just earning a paycheck and those that have true passion for their subject and for their success. Thanks for all that you do and for showing that passion is what is needed to be successful in any career, this is what your students take away from your classroom. Well done. James Jackson
Charles, one method to consider is a baseline study of the current skills, abilities and product knowledge of the current faculty. You can then conduct a gap analysis of the current baseline information and where you feel things need to go for a positive impact on your institution. Resources such as these can require some level of budget while others are more time intensive but can be done at little or no cost. The key is to have total acceptance by the institution and by all the faculty. James Jackson

Martin, what are the current issues with dress code at your institution? Do all students have access to the proper clothing? Does your institution provide any assistance with respect to professional dress? Thanks for anything you can share. James Jackson

Melanie, you have hit on a very common topic and there are never easy answers. One suggestion is to get involved within any group discussions that may be available such as a discussion group. Invite both instructors and administrators and get the conversations moving forward. If there is a lack of support for the rules, why are the rules in place? Is there some level of a happy medium you can find so you are able to enforce the rules you feel are vital to the success of your class and be more relaxed on those rules that do not… >>>

Richard, great post and another term is engagement. Students need to be engaged to truly learn. Some students can put on a good show but research has shown that engagement is the key and building in some level of repeating key concepts and skills. James Jackson
Shirley, well stated. Students know who is fake and who is truthful. Never be fake and lead by example. Students will learn from their mistakes just like instuctors. Making a mistake is not a bad thing but not learning from it or not using it as a learning opportunity is just foolish in my book. The more you can show students how to learn from their mistakes they will become more familiar with your teaching style and trusting of your methods. James Jackson
Shirley, not all students have the same interest with respect to being a buddy with an instructor. For some they just do not have multiple choices with respect to mentors and role models. Be careful not to lump all students into a single catagory. Guiding your students is a best practice but this in no way implies you cannot teach with an intelligent heart as both are needed to be truly successful. James Jackson
Barbara, great post and thanks for sharing. What techniques do you utilize to get a better understanding of your students and their testing skills? Thanks for anything you can share. James Jackson
