Sharon, inspect what you expect and model the behaviors you want followed. The word "Adult" can be misleading as it does not always fall in alignment with their age. You can just as easily work with a 25 year old adult as you can a 37 year old adolescent. If you use the first day of class as a means of setting the expectations early and engage your students in discussions as to why the classroom rules are as they are, then the ability to work with both mature adults and those that are still in some level of adolescence… >>>

Larry, well done and so correct. Students need to know your path to success especially if it had some twists and turns. Never make up a story to have something to say but if your path to success had some rocks in the road, share with your students and how you navigated the rocks. Not everyone will be able to follow your path but knowing the course instructor also met with challenges make a class subject more real for many students. Thanks for sharing. James Jackson

Elaine, be careful to just take a nod by a student as an affirmation that they understand an important topic. Be a bit more formal and use the Socratic method. Ask questions and probe for understanding. Assure yourself without a question of doubt that your students understand to a deep level the key concepts you want them to take away from class. Irma, another technique to consider is to have a class discussion about what changes would they like to see in the classroom to keep their attention and gain their full engagement. One aspect of quality instruction is to consider changes to your own delivery methods to keep students engaged. James Jackson
Marie, great technique. Setting the stage day one is critical. Also important to get students directly engaged with the consequences of going outside the classroom boundaries. Once the initial rules are established and discussed, implementation is easier and control is rarely lost. Thanks for sharing. James Jackson

Charles, what a great statement. One size simply does not fit all. Time must be taken to understand the needs of individual students and the utilization of different teaching techniques. Thanks for sharing. James Jackson
Marie, great post and obviously you are a successful professional and will continue to grow because you get it and you understand how to continually improve. Please come back and share what techniques you used from the course and what results you experienced. James Jackson

Dale, what are some of the techniques you use to allow students to have the early wins and gain confidence early in the class? Thanks for anything you can share. James Jackson
Jon-Paul, very creative and looks to be a good use of class time. Would be interesting to compare the outcomes of your students with those of other classrooms that are not incorporating your methods. My guess is you are getting some higher outcomes than others. Please provide any additional insights you care to share. James Jackson
Daniel, greatly appreciate the feedback. Hopefully your institution will gain insight from quality instructors such as yourself as it appears to me you have a good understanding of the pulse of your students and their engagement levels with the current curriculum. I will look forward to reading more of your posts once the new curriculum is implemented. James Jackson
