Activity

While I am not sure why online classes have such a dropout rate, there do seem to be students who for whatever reason register and begin a class but then discontinue.  Email and assignment comments, and watching activity online are all tools to see if a student is active.

I learned that synchronous discussions are tricky and with that they require different strategy than asynchronous discussions.

Online teaching includes a filling in the gaps between students and material.  This can be seen in tasks like increasing "social" interactions in discussions, anticipating issues that come up and providing opportunities for learning through the details that come up.

Learning about the EMS is an ongoing process.

I 100% see that integrating visual aids during lecture helps with retention.  I often make time for in lecturing labeling activities.  I will try a new approach; perhaps the Draw a Term or something like the Whole Brain Organizer.

I like the idea of using a sequential game strategy within class to perhaps introduce material that isn't covered directly.

I like the ball toss. I would give students a minute to come up with something they learned today, then start and have them toss to other students.

I always resented the push to make learning like a game for some reason.  However, after this module it's hit me more like it can be a tool to make certain associations or learning easy, which indeed is an objective no matter what content.  Certainly, there is a range of options to include as well, from merely having students work together, to having an accrual of points, to an actual game format etc.

Being aware of and practicing different options for content practice and delivery will make said content accessible to more students.

After I share a few things about myself, I really like going around the room and having students share their name, and whatever they want to share.  This give students the opt out ~ some just aren't in the mood ~ and some will share quite a bit. It's unfortunate if there is no time to do something like this.
