Activity

I have learned about inclusivity of every student. I typically introduce myself on the first day as being "different, just like everyone else in the classroom". This module reminded me to watch for "bullying" or "teasing" by others and to not assume based on gender identity or culture.

I learned about the advantages and disadvantages of using various types of questions. How you can make them more at the application or higher thinking level was interesting. This section reassures me that the use of some question types still serve a purpose in assessing the student's knowledge. Using a variety of question types rather than 100% multiple choice is supported.

I was reminded about the best characteristics of a well-asked question. Reminded to repeat and reinforce, to give more time to students to respond especially if English is not their first language, and avoid "Does that make sense?" or "Any questions?". Don't assume if you get no response to those questions that the students are all understanding the concepts taught.

I like the idea of using the flipped classroom technique more often. Also the use of discussion boards within our LMS on current subjects related to the course objectives might be of use. Connecting with the Net Generation when you are a Baby Boomer can sometimes be challenging for the instructor but it helps a lot to have children in that generation :)

Nice reminder of first impressions, the starting of class with enthusiasm, giving the "hook" at the start or end of class, asking questions often, reinforcing learning, connecting classes to each other, applying the learning to their careers (the why)

Discovered some interesting ways to use technology in the classroom. Will incorporate a few of the ideas in my teaching. Long module if you check all of the links but very useful for the current type of learners in college.

This module has shown me various apps and websites that can be used to engage and educate my students. Learning about various strategies and various forms of technology out there helped me to think of ways to enhance the learning experience for my students, especially while learning online.

It was interesting to review ways to manage the classroom, with respect to discipline. Since I have been teaching for a long time, I have faced many of these situations first-hand. It was reassuring to me that the way I handled the situations were as recommended. Great tips to pass on to other instructors.

I found that I adjust my classroom management style to suit the situation. This module though helped to reinforce why the guide is the best style to use the majority of the time. Good tips on how to coach others to change their style!

I found the section on overcoming barriers to active learning interesting. Very relevant to my role as faculty mentor as we try to implement more active learning into their classes.
