About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Zita, Good point about having a well prepared syllabus. The "I don't know" claims still come up and with a well prepared syllabus those claims can be reduced to referring them back to the syllabus that they were given at the beginning of the course. This also reduces student frustration since they have the needed information in print or online. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Todd, Well said and a good model to follow. Thank you for sharing it with us. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Eric, Good for you. An attitude like this really helps to "sell" your course and the content. Keep the smile and passion for your content and your students will greatly benefit. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Dr. Enrique, How do you propose to do this? Can you compress the lecture part and expand the lab or including optional lab sessions? Thanks for you input on this. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Christie, Good strategies to follow. All of these components contribute to the expansion of your instructional expertise and enhanced learning for your students. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Aisha, I am excited about the opportunities for learning you are offering your students. The tell, show, do model really helps students to see application and relevancy to what they are learning. Keep up the good work. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Tonja, Little things like this all contribute to confidence and understanding on the part of an instructor as they get ready for an upcoming class. Keep looking for ways to expand your expertise as an instructor and you will have a rewarding teaching career. I wish you much success. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Stacy, My experience as well. I put my student in learning groups composed of a balance of life experienced and just graduated students so they can learn to work with each other while earning the respect of each other in relation to what each group contributes to the class. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Stacy, So true. It is easy to get in a rut and just act out the course content without bringing the passion that once was there. We cannot let this happen if we are to remain effective instructional delivery experts. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Jasmin, Time management is a critical element of success for students just as you mention. Often with the pressures of life they let their studies go and soon find themselves in real trouble with their schooling. They need to be shown effective study skills so they can maximize the time they do have to devote to their courses. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
